Bulgaria President: Mayor Borisov Failed to Solve Garbage Crisis in Sofia

Solving the garbage crisis in the capital has failed and the one responsible is Sofia Mayor Boyko Borisov, Bulgaria’s President Georgi Parvanov said Thursday.

Mr Parvanov told reporters that the main problem is that no waste treatment plant has been built over many years of a looming crisis.

Citizens of the Sofia district of Suhodol declared last week they are giving up peaceful protests over the nearby dumpsite reopened in the end of 2007 and are going to do everything possible to protect the environment and the health of the local people.

The protesters also accuse Borisov over not keeping promises to close the dumpsite and build a waste treatment plant that would solve the garbage crisis in Sofia, the only solution to which now is using the full to the brim landfill in Suhodol.
