Over 300 carol singer gather at a festival in Silistra

The fourteenth festival “Koledarsko nadpiavane” (Carol singing competition) will take place today in Silistra. The municipality of Silistra will be the organizers of the event. For the first time this year, there will be a requirement that all carol singers be young people.

The tradition of the “Koledari” (Carol singers) is alive in the region of Silistra. In the village Malak Preslavets a song still remains from ancient times – the “king’s palace” is next to the “world tree”, under which a “golden table is set, with a meal and a jug of wine”.

The ethnic Russians in the village Tataritsa (near Silistra) end the Lent with the traditional Christmas dish “haladets”. Tataritsa is populated by Russians that came in these lands over 300 years ago.
