The storks are back

15 white storks were observed in Burgas by the ornithologists of the Ecology center “Poda”, branch of the Bulgarian union for protection of birds.

Despite the strong wind, the birds managed to fly high and head north. These are the first migratory guests in Bulgaria for 2009, which mark the beginning of the spring.

The center gives information on the seasonal migration of the birds that can be observed locally.

75% of the European population of white storks – over 250 thousand specimens, and 100% of the European population of pink pelicans pass through that region, as well as hundreds of thousands of other birds.

Information on this natural phenomenon has been gathered since 1989, and the collected data is used to research and estimate the condition of the population of migrating birds.
