August 30th: Stefka Kostadinova sets the world record

On this day back in 1987, Stefka Kostadinova set the still reigning world record in the women’s high jump with 2.09 m which she jumped at the World Championships in Athletics in Rome.

Other important Bulgarian events on this date include:

* 1040 — The rebellion of Petar Delyan against the Byzantine tyranny begins.
* 1881 — In Sofia, the first flags are given to the divisions of the Bulgarian army.
* 1907 — In Sofia, the Monument to the Tsar Liberator is officially finished.
* 1924 — The Orthodox church Alexander Nevski is opened and blessed.
* 1992 — The historical press conference of the former president Jelio Jelev, known as “Boyana Meadows”, takes place. He criticizes the Bulgarian government and the prime minister Filip Dimitrov.
